Knowledge is power. When we learn more about the potentially nasty chemicals in our toothpaste, we can eliminate them from our daily routines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Toothpaste toxins<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are a number of potentially harmful chemicals found in toothpaste we use every day. Although small quantities won’t cause immediate harm, using them regularly increases the risk of adverse reactions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fluoride element<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most conventional toothpaste contains fluoride. But why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Early in the 1900s, dentists noticed that people living in areas where water was naturally higher in fluoride had fewer cavities. Soon, a correlation between fluoride and dental hygiene was established and fluoridated toothpaste became the standard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It seems like a good thing to have fewer cavities, but fluoride is a neurotoxin that can cause thyroid issues in both adults and children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to a study in Canada, adults with high fluoride levels in urine are more likely to have underactive thyroids. Similarly, another study looking at Chinese school children noted that even low to moderate fluoride exposure affected their thyroid function \u2013 and knock-on effects on their IQ scores as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to its risks to our health, fluoride can damage our teeth as well. Too much fluoride causes brown spots and discoloration. This is known as fluorosis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Glycol propylene<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The American Contact Dermatitis Society named propylene glycol the 2018 Allergen of the Year. So you might wonder what it has to do with toothpaste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Propylene glycol gives toothpaste a smoother texture and keeps it from drying out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aside from its smooth texture, propylene glycol can be toxic and cause serious health complications, such as kidney damage and sepsis-like symptoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While it doesn’t appear in toothpaste in such high quantities and is considered safe by the FDA, most of us will think twice about swallowing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Contains parabens<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A longer shelf life isn’t worth the risk associated with parabens, which have been attracting attention for years due to their effect on hormones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Environmental Working Group has linked parabens to everything from lowered fertility to an increased risk of breast cancer. They are endocrine disruptors and mimic estrogen in our bodies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sweeteners made from artificial sources<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a result, manufacturers add artificial sweeteners to conventional toothpaste to make it taste better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aspartame and saccharin are common sweeteners in toothpaste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As one of the most commonly used artificial sweeteners, saccharin is generally considered safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A 2019 study found, however, that this sweetener is associated with diabetes, obesity, and impaired kidney and liver function in rats over the long term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While humans aren’t rats, the study raises some questions about saccharin’s safety when we use it daily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A 2017 review of the evidence called for greater scrutiny of aspartame’s safety in humans as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Researchers found that aspartame might increase oxidative stress and damage our cell membranes, leading to inflammation, when they combined limited human research with animal studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The use of artificial colorings and dyes<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, most conventional toothpaste contains artificial colors that give them those bright hues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although these dyes and colors are approved for use in food, that’s not necessarily reassuring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Artificial food colorings are linked to hyperactivity and behavioral problems in children, according to research published by the American Society for Experimental NeuroTherapeutics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A new report from the Center for Science in the Public Interest examines the safety of food dyes and colors, such as those used in toothpastes. As well as hyperactivity, the report reveals possible links to allergies and cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
